Quickie Question: Making Any Crafty Gifts for the Holidays?

By Twistie

Ah, November! It’s properly cold outside, and we crafty folk have already begun to plot what we’re doing to… er… for our unsuspecting friends next month in the whirl of holiday gift-giving season.

This year I intend to capitalize on my lovely new stove, and my brand-spanking-new digital candy thermometer to give various of my friends and family members gifts of homemade citrus curds and candies. Oh, there will be a few books and movies and suchlike, too, but we’re on a tight budget, and a few jars of curd will make a lot of people happy.

So what about all of you? Are you knitting mittens? Crocheting pretty hats? Weaving up some placemats for someone’s table? Carving something decorative or practical? Restoring a favorite chair? What crafty things are you up to for your friends and family for the holiday season?

I’ve fallen in love with the crocheted birds from “Little Crochet” by Linda Permann (who also happens to be a real-life friend). She’s made some from Noro Silk Garden Sock yarn and added a bead and tassel to the bottom so it looks like a terribly elegant holiday ornament. I want to make about a dozen or so for family and give them along with our traditional homemade nut brittle.

My nieces and nephews are all getting t-shirts that I’ve silk-screened with a personalized message of some sort. (The oldest nephew gets, “WARNING: If the zombies attack, I’m tripping you.” The youngest nephew gets “Purina Zombie Chow.” Still working on the nieces.)

I really wanted to get some canned goods done this summer to give as gifts but, well…it just didn’t happen. I’ve already knitted one scarf in an angora/merino blend and I’ve got another one on the needles. I want to knit some His & His washcloths for some friends who were civilly union(iz)ed this summer. Tonight I’m taking a Crocheted Snowflakes class, so I’m hoping I can whip up some of those for presents as well.

I know what you mean about it being a frugal holiday.

I’m making felt amoeba and paramecium magnets for my family members. With embroidery floss cilli and everything.
