This Is Your Spider on Drugs
By TwistieIt’s fun to go wandering on Etsy and see what there is to see. This morning, I found this.
So what precisely is it? Well, it’s a spider web embroidered in holographic silver thread on a black satin backing. The thread throws off a rainbow effect when hit with sunlight.
As for why the picture announces ‘Caffeine’ at the bottom… that’s the beauty part. Here’s what the artist, Amy Sweetman of Anatomology, has to say about that:
Dr. Peter Witt spent over 22 years investigating spider web building and its sensitivity to drugs. He did his analysis by measuring and analyzing photographs of webs build under different circumstances. These embroidered images are replications of some of his photographs in his book, A Spider’s Web; Problems in Regulatory Biology; [by] Peter N. Witt, Charles F. Reed [and] David B. Peakall Berlin, Heidelberg, New York, Springer-Verlag, 1968. Viii, 107 p. illus. 26 cm.
I don’t know about you, but at the bargain price of $32.00, I want to hang one right over my coffee pot. And maybe get a couple for my similarly caffeine-dependent friends. It won’t stop us drinking coffee, or even slow us down, but it will make us giggle a lot.
Oh, and if you’re looking for a rather graphic way of offering your heart to someone for Valentine’s Day, Anatomology also features an anatomically-correct heart pendant that may interest you.
