Left Out No More

Happy Left-Hander’s Day!

Yes, it’s a real day. August 13. And this month friday the thirteenth lands on a monday, which makes it more dangerous. Bonus points to anyone who knows where that concept comes from.

Anyway.

As a southpaw, sometimes it’s hard to find equipment set up for me, let alone instructions to use it properly.

So in honor of the day, I have found a selection of tools and instructions to help my fellow right-minders be super crafty.

For years I dealt with notebooks and sketchpads that were set up all wrong for me before I started simply flipping them so the spiral binding wasn’t directly under my sketching/writing hand. But I always thought it would be nice to find some sketch pads set up for my particular wiring. Well, I wish my twenty year old self could have found these cool left-handed sketchbooks I found at Amazon. It’s a set of three sketchbooks in various sizes and paper weights, featuring famous lefties of history, such as Mark Twain, Ben Franklin, Queen Victoria, and Jimi Hendrix. At just $20.00, this would make a welcome gift for the southpaw in your life… including you.

Sewing is another thing that can be more difficult when you’re left-handed, simply because finding a good pair of lefty shears can be a pain. And then there’s the measuring tape. Yeah, that’s not set up for us, either. But at Amazon you can get this nifty four-piece basic kit for sewing. It includes a pair of true left-handed shears, a measuring tape designed specifically for left-handed sewers, and two kinds of ambidextrous snips for random threads. All that for just $35.00.

Of course not everyone is into sewing. Maybe you prefer pottery, but the wheels aren’t comfortable for you to use.

Well, all that can be a thing of the past with this handy left-handed table top pottery wheel by Speedball. Easy to set up, easy to pack away when not in use, it’s a great choice if you’ve got more creativity than space to work in. $396.96 from Amazon.

Then again, maybe you want to try out something new. How about needle tatting? Learn Needle Tatting Step By Step includes instructions for both right and left handed tatters. Oh, and a #5-0 needle, too! All that for just $11.99 from  Create For Less.

Sure, as lefties we could just turn everything around and do it all right handed. We’ve been doing it for centuries. But you know what? We don’t have to do it that way anymore. Me? I’m not going to. I’m going to celebrate my southerly tendencies.

Join me, my fellow southpaws! We have nothing to lose but our frustration!
